IN(N)OVATORIUM PETRILA - architecture & creative industries

Project description

The monuments and industrial sites are witnesses to the growth of cities along with mining industry, and are the first to suffer when become unused. Therefore, any contemporary architectural intervention monuments must stand up to the challenge representing the needs of today's society and resonate with the historic context of the community it belongs, socially and culturally. The project is focused on the mining industrial heritage and the in-between connections with the city. Petrila Mine is the context for the diploma project and is the oldest coal mine in the Jiu Valley. The industrial complex is located near the entrance of the Petrila, in the southern part of the city. The site was classified Historical Monument in 2016, being included in A value group and registered in Romanian List of Historical Monuments. The rarity and unique value are given by the age of the mine 161 years, with historical traces of evolution and development of coal mining techniques throughout the Jiu Valley. The architectural intervention consists in proposing a new terminus train station node and a cultural and community center. There will be a train station connecting Petrosani train station via the existing normal railways, recently former used to transport the coal. From here, residents or tourists can change public transportation with an electric train that will operate on the narrow industrial railway to Lonea, on a 6 km distance. There will be also other variants of transport options, bicycles, scooters or connections with local public transport. Architectural design proposal emphasizes verticality of the ensemble industrial silhouette by inserting simple volumes to fit into the original composition without dominating the existing context, especially two of the most important old Heritage Buildings that are on either side of the new building Through using the heritage value of the site and using contemporary architecture as innovative instrument to activate and engage new cultural and technological purposes, the project opens the former mining terrain space to the city as public active space, while re-commissioning the community within the new city space. All these actions are designed through architecture to activate the mining site by putting Petrila back on the cultural and technological map for cultural activists and industries, and the local community in order to attract as many tourists, visitors and maybe new innovative inhabitants and residents and visitors.
