Project description
Our initiative set off as a critical approach, regarding the existent and forthcoming status of the area proposed to develop through the architecture competition organized by Timișoara City Hall for MultipleXity - Art, Technology and Experiment Centre. Located in Timișoara, the architecture competition is meant to transform an important part of the industrial heritage of the city, the tram depot, in a cultural and technological experiment center.As a response to successive changes and development without a long-term integrated strategy, but also considering the current status of that area, our proposal integrates the architecture competition requirements into a larger scale development strategy meant to solve urban problems like interconnectivity or accessible green areas. Thereby, are connected the main elements in a sustainable structure consisting of three steps to develop in a minimum of at least ten years: the refurbishment and improvement of the existing buildings for Timișoara - 2021 European Cultural Capital; multifunctional pavilion, parking, high office building; physical planning, public space completion, underground passage. Starting with public space recovery and expansion, we create the development support and propose the removal of some site elements, existent or already in an approval phase, anachronistic in time and space, unable to sustain cultural or creative activities. The subway supports the improvement of public space and connectivity, facilitates urban flows, including pedestrian and bike lanes.Once the Experiment Centre matures and grows its potential, we propose a vertical creative hub. This will become a landmark and a representative element for the place and the city, through individuality generated by materiality (brick) and the silhouette (tramway lines guiding urban movement), remembering some defining stages for the history of the city.
